Body Worn Cameras: 3 Examples of Big Brands Using Them

Eemits Requalifies for SafeContractor Accreditation

Body-worn cameras continue to grow in popularity. This is largely down to the fact they record footage as and when it happens, and their primary use is to combat anti-social behaviour - something which is a constant source of pain for both businesses and the general public in the UK. But which businesses have started using them, and what's the "why" behind their decision to use BWC technology?

In today's blog we take a look at 3 examples of big brands using BWC to stamp out theft and anti-social behaviour.

Greggs adopt BWC to prevent sausage roll theft

Yes, you read that heading correctly. Greggs has recently implemented body-worn cameras in some of its bakery stores in order to reduce the amount of sausage roll theft that is taking place. The cameras are also being used to reduce abusive behaviour towards staff, who have to deal with difficult customers on a daily basis.

The wearable technology has been trialled in some of its busy London stores, and a sign will be present outside the front door alerting people to the fact that they will be recorded when they go in for their favourite pastry or sandwich.

Sources close to the story suggested that the camera technology that has a 90-minute lifespan but take five seconds or so to start recording - at which point the golden, flaky pastry may well already be on its way out the door. Perhaps Greggs should re-assess which body cameras suit the scenario the most?

Pret a Manger joins the club

Just like Greggs, Pret a Manger have started to take action against theft and anti-social behaviour. Adopting a similar approach to Greggs, the popular coffee shop and eatery has deployed BWC technology in some of its London stores. And the devices are currently only being worn by team leaders or managers - and the devices will only be switched on during certain circumstances.

Only Pret's security team will have access to the footage. It's an interesting development to see a growing number of food and drink outlets deploying wearable technology like BWC.

ScotRail triples its efforts

Earlier this year ScotRail announced that it had tripled the amount of body cameras it was using for the benefit and safety of its staff. Replacing its existing fleet of 350 body cameras with 1,000 new Motorola VB400 devices, ScotRail has invested £1.6 million to tackle anti-social behaviour on and off its train services.

The company first introduced BWC in 2017, following a successful trial. During the process, they found that customers positively changed their behaviour when they were informed that they were being recorded. The new investment also coincides with the increase in frontline staff, particularly on late night trains on key routes.

It's a great example of BWC being used effectively, with the right level of investment.
