Eemits at the Floating Offshore Wind 2023 Conference
09/10/2023
The Floating Offshore Wind Conference returned bigger and better for 2023, as over 2,000 delegates from the industry got together to discuss the future of offshore wind - and we were there to be part of the conversation.
Held at the state-of-the-art P&J event complex in Aberdeen, the two-day conference highlighted the current state-of-play for the industry, and started to put into practice what upcoming floating wind projects will help to spearhead the UK to Net Zero.
Over the course of the two days, here's what we learnt about today and tomorrow for the floating wind industry in Scotland and further afield:
The clock is ticking
One of the biggest takeaways from Floating Offshore Wind Conference 2023 was that the clock is ticking for targets to be hit for 2030 and beyond.
And in the aftermath of a poor renewables auction, Scottish Energy Minister, Gillian Martin, raised serious questions over the UK's government ability to deliver on targets for floating wind.
The UK intends to collectively generate 50GW of offshore wind by 2030, including 5GW of floating wind, but estimations show that only 1.3GW is currently on track to deliver within the deadline.
No decline in the pipeline
On the first day of the conference, 4 October 2023, a report from RenewableUK was published. It showed that the total pipeline of floating offshore wind projects has increased by 32 per cent, going from 185GW to 244GW.
These figures includes all projects, regardless of status, so wind farms that may never receive the appropriate licencing or investments are factored into the equation.
It's encouraging to see so many projects in the pipeline though. Some of the missing pieces are driven by policy and policits, and the hope is that a pipeline ready to burst with renewable power can be supercharged by the powers that be.
There's strength in the supply chain
As noted above, over 2,000 attendees gathered in Aberdeen to learn more about the industry's future. This included businesses that specialised in everything from underwater cameras, port operations, and two-way radio systems (shameless plug).
And what became apparent was the need for a strong supply chain, one that could drive innovation, and ultimately one that could help projects flourish from the early development phase all the way up to the decommission phase some decades later.
Eemits services for offshore wind
Eemits is proud to already partner with some established leaders in the field, including EDF Renewables. Our most recent work has come on the Neart na Gaoithe (NnG) project off the Fife coast. This has included comms solution at the Port of Dundee, the O&M base in Eyemouth, and the onshore substation.
We offer wide area network coverage and rapid deployment of systems via our cloud-based TRBOCALL platform. We specialise in Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) Tier III systems and recommend the use of DMR over Terrestial Trunked Radio (TETRA) as DMR has better penetration in wind turbines, whereas TETRA needs additional infrastrucure making the solution less cost-effective than DMR.
If you'd like to know more about the solutions we can put in place at your wind farm, then contact us today.
