How Two-Way Radios Can Help Santa Deliver Presents
19/12/2023
In the 1994 Christmas film, The Santa Clause, Scott Calvin assumes the responsibility of Santa Claus, when the Santa before him falls off his roof and vanishes into thin air. And it got us thinking, what role could two-way radios play for Santa in respect to safety, productivity, and efficiency?
In a whole host of Christmas films, there's a recurring theme where something has gone wrong, and Santa has to try and piece things together in a race against time to deliver all his presents. For the purposes of this content, we'll assume that it never quite runs smoothly in real-life - especially when Santa has to deliver presents to 152,130 households per minute!
So, in this blog, we're going to explore the ways in which two-way radios can make Christmas Eve run a bit smoother for whoever is in the big red suit.
Elf and safety features
Two-way radios have a range of safety features, and some of them would come in very handy for Santa and his merry band of elves. Keep reading below to find out what they are how they'd benefit the mad Christmas Eve dash.
Man Down
Santa has a lot of roofs to land on in one night. If it's snowing, his reindeer aren't behaving, or he's had one too many trays of cookies, then the likelihood of falling from a great height is increased.
Man Down is a feature where the radio detects that the device is at an unusual angle, and if it stays in the same position for a set period of time, an alert will be sent to other radios and PC dispatchers. If someone needs to take the reins like Scott Calvin did, then Man Down can ensure this happens in speedy fashion, and the real Santa can be seen to quickly.
Lone Worker
Although Santa has Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, and Rudolph to keep him company, it can still be a lonely job. With Mrs Claus and the elves back at the North Pole, Santa has the difficult job of navigating the entire globe as the only human.
Lone Worker is a feature that acts as a welfare check and a safety feature. Rather than nobody having contact with Santa, or trying to call him when he's stationery, a pre-emptive alert/message can be sent to his radio device. To signal that everything is fine, Santa just needs to press a button.
If something is wrong, and Santa doesn't respond to the welfare check, an emergency alarm will be triggered, so Mrs Claus and the elves can either send for help or magically appear like they do in the movies, to help him out.
Lone Worker also syncs up to GPS location tracking, so Santa's precise location is easy to identify.
Outdoor Location Tracking
Santa Tracker's have become so popular online, that Google have their own Google Santa Tracker. But whilst this one is designed to keep the kids entertained, Mrs Claus and the elves could be taking advantage of the GPS location tracking feature on a two-way radio.
Via a PC dispatcher, the workshop can keep track of Santa's precise location. Not only that, but they can create geofences that will ensure they know Santa is on the right tracks for his deliveres. If he strays from the geofence or enters an unknown area, an alert can be sent straight to the workshop, and any worries of there being a last-minute dash to save Christmas can be eradicated.
The present of productivity
It's not just safety features that make a two-way radio a suitable companion on Christmas Eve. Some two-way radios have great productivity features. Here's a quick list of a few features.
Job Ticketing
Santa's made his list and checked it twice, but now it's the turn of his Head Elf to check their own list, and make sure the big man isn't spending too much time eating cookies and drinking milk. A feature known as Job Ticketing is a great way for a team to keep track of task completion.
Via a centralised dispatcher, tasks can be created, logged, and reviewed to ensure productivity is high. In the scenario of delivering presents, tasks can be set and sent directly to Santa's radio so he knows exactly which house he's calling at next.
Once deliveries have been completed, task statuses can be reviewed - along with how long the task has taken. This will help the entire workshop to plan for next Christmas in respect to how smoothly the last one went.
Taking into account the point above, the elves themselves can utilise Job Ticketing for when they're busy building toys and fulfiling the wishes of people all over the world.
Text Messaging
Delivering millions of presents, whilst ensuring nobody sees you, is about as covert as a mission can be. If the workshop has vital updates for Santa, they can send him a text message to his radio, and he can either read it or reply to it, without waking people up.
The latest accessories
High on Santa's own Christmas wish list should be the latest radio accessories. Earpieces, remote speaker microphones, and headsets can help Santa throughout his journey. Earpieces are ideal for when conversations need to be discreet, remote speaker microphones make it easier to communicate when he's rumaging around for the next present, and a headset is suitable when he wants to block out any unneccessary background noise on his way from one continent to the next.
