Social Distancing on a Construction Site - How to Improve Communication
09/09/2020
As a direct impact of the Coronavirus pandemic, 30% of construction companies suspended operations as a result of not being able to comply with duty of care to their employees and not being able to maintain the 2-metre social distancing rule.
Companies are being encouraged to bring their employees back to work and begin to return to normal practices whilst adhering to social distancing guidelines to protect their staff.
Social distancing has brought about many communication problems for businesses and 2-way radio can help to solve these.
Maintaining Communication on a Construction Site
One of the key problem areas is how to maintain communications across a business whilst adhering to social distancing guidelines.
A solution to this problem is to use 2-way radios across a construction site to maintain a safe distance between staff. 2-way radios enable staff to communicate with one another from a safe distance therefore negating the need for face-to-face conversation.
Maintaining Communications Across Multiple Construction Sites
The Government are advising that where possible 'fixed teams' are to be used to reduce spreading Covid-19 across multiple teams.
2-way radios can be used by staff to communicate with other construction sites and offices removing the need for users to move across a variety of work areas, reducing the risk of multiple sites having to close should an outbreak of Covid-19 occur.
Reducing Aerosol Transmission on a Construction Site
Construction Workplace Safety Guidance advises that workplaces should refrain from playing music or any broadcasts so that workers do not need to shout or raise their voices to be heard.
By using 2-way radios, members of staff do not need to raise their voices, instead they can communicate quickly, clearly and safely using radios - even when using face coverings and from a distance.
Managing the Use of High-Traffic Areas on a Construction Site
Government guidance is that measures must be taken to reduce congestion in areas seen as high-traffic areas such as access points, lift and walkways.
2-way radios can be used to communicate with staff to instruct them to avoid confined areas at given times and make them aware of any issues that may arise so that they can avoid them without the need for face-to-face conversations.
Reducing Equipment Rotation on a Construction Site
Construction companies are being advised to reduce equipment rotation as much as possible by the Government to prevent equipment from being contaminated and then being passed from person to person.
2-way radios can be provided to individual members of staff to improve communications whilst adhering to government guidelines. This will provide reassurance to staff that health and safety is a priority as they will not have to share equipment, such as telephones.
