Tech For Education: How To Solve a Problem Like Vaping
07/11/2024
The UK education sector faces all kinds of issues and challenges when it comes to maintaining a positive, thriving learning environment for young people. And one of those problems in particular is the rise of young people (and we mean young) taking up the habit of vaping.
This blog analysyes the current problems facing the UK education sector, and how they can put actions in place to start escaping the vaping problem.
A concerning numbers game
Data from NHS England shows straight away how problematic vaping has become in the UK. They state that a quarter of 11 to 15-year-olds have tried vaping, and almost 1 in 10 vape on a regular basis. This is a serious problem, and something that is difficult to not only tackle, but to get your head round in the first place.
A growing habit as the years go by
When people pick up a habit from an early age, it's difficult for them to stop. And further data from Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) shows that nearly a third of 16 to 17-year-olds have tried vaping, and over 40% of 18-year-olds have tried vaping. This shows how common it is for young people to start vaping and continue to do so as they get older.
Anti-social gatherings creating a dark cloud
From a school's perspective, the habit of vaping isn't just a health concern. It's also causing anti-social behaviour and it's having a negative impact on learning. In a survey of 4,000 teachers, 54 per cent of them said that students repeatedly leave lesson in order to vape.
Emphasis on the E in problem
So, why are young people so inclined to vape? Well, ASH also states that 8 per cent of 11 to 17-year-olds buy vapes online where age verification is a process that is easy to simply just bypass. Not only that, but social media is having a negative impact on young people's decision making. Social media and branding of vapes make them appear "cool" and that everyone should do it as a healthy alternative to smoking.
The same report also showed that vapes are often sold at school or in areas where people can't be caught.
A ban is coming - but is it enough?
The UK Government has introduced new legislation to ban the sale of disposable vapes from 1 June 2025. But with youth vaping having more than doubled over the last 5 years, the bill may not be strict enough in respect to educational facilities introducing more robust measures during learning hours.
A sensor smart enough to curb the problem
The good news is that, as vaping becomes more common, so does technology designed to stop its problems (health concerns, anti-social behaviour, damage to property). One of the best available options on the market is the Halo Smart Sensor - which is a vape detector that identifies where and when vaping is taking place.
Halo features (snapshot):
- Motion detection
- Emergency alert
- Panic button
- Occupancy & people counting
- Live view map
Time to put your syncing cap on
The Halo Smart Sensor syncs with dispatcher software for seamless integration and live-view functionality. All available via our TRBOCALL dispatcher solution.
Dispatcher functionality:
- Emergency alerts
- Location tracking
- Connectivity with MOTOTRBO radios (like the Motorola R7)
- Voice activated
