Utilities: Group Your Teams Together For Better Communication

As the saying goes, “too many cooks spoil the broth”. In the energy and utilities sector, too many people being involved with the same thing can refer to several different scenarios. 

The scenario we’re focusing on today is when a business has a two-way radio system in place but has all of their workers operating on the same channel(s). For example, operations are on channel 1, but so is maintenance and engineering. 

The problem with this? Seriously congested radio channels then result in two-way communication becoming a battle of many trying to speak over one another – and often around subjects that don’t directly impact another team.

Dedicated group channels

The best way to ensure your operational efficiency isn’t impacted by poor two-way communication is by having set teams on set radio channels. 

Making sure that maintenance speaks to maintenance and engineering and engineering sounds simplistic in principal, but in practice it can become a logistical nightmare without the right solution in place. 

Depending on the device and system you are using, you can have multiple channels where all of your teams can be segregated. 

You can even create channel groups where you have two teams talking to each other on a daily basis, as one team’s work impacts the other. 

If your business is using a trunked radio system, then you will have the ability to automatically assign frequency channels to groups of radios. 

Please be aware that dedicated channels aren’t available on licence-free radios, as they operate on an open frequency that anyone within range can access (including users outside of your business).

Having someone in control of who is on what channel is handy too. Picture a scenario where a bit of ‘office politics’ is going on and one team thinks they should (or shouldn’t) be talking to the other.
