5 Industrial Motorola Radios for Manufacturing
08/05/2024
Industrial Motorola radios are high quality products. Their robust build, superior audio quality, and range of safety features make them standout performers in a saturated market. They are suitable devices for a range of industries, including manufacturing - where the work environment can be harsh and background noise can exceed reasonable levels.
In this blog we'll focus on the manufacturing industry, and identify five of the most suitable indsutrial Motorola radios for food and drink producers, car makers, and anything in between. Let's jump straight into the relevant two-way radio devices.
5 industrial Motorola radios for manufacturing
Motorola R7
The Motorola R7 is a market-leading product in the two-way radio world. Its suitability for manufacturing comes in the form of impressive audio capabilities, seamless connectivity, and superior build quality.
Impressive audio capabilities
Featuring Adaptive Dual Microphone Noise Cancelling technology, the R7 allows your team to hear each other over the deafening sound of machinery, or the background of a busy production line.
On top of this, Automatic Acoustic Feedback uses smart thinking to cancel out the feedback from other nearby radios. And Intelligent Audio utilises artificial intelligence to automatically monitor background noise, and increase or decrease radio volume without pressing a single button.
To wrap things up nicely, the R7 delivers 102 phons (of loudness) straight out of the box, or 107 phons when the extra loud audio profile is activated.
Seamless connectivity
The R7 has superior receiver sensitivity, so you'll still be able to send and receive important updates at the edge of coverage (where other radios may struggle). Picture a busy food manufacturing environment. The maintenace team may be in a remote location, but need to speak with someone on the production floor - so greater receiver sensitivity will reduce the chances of teams not being able to reach other.
The device also has great flexibility, in the sense it will connect with every type of MOTOTRBO system. So regardless of the size of your site, you'll be able to take advantage of the R7s coverage capabilities.
And from a software perspective, the R7 performs updates in the same way as a modern smartphone. All software updates are carried out via over-the-over programming, which is made possible by WiFi connectivity. This means you can focus on the job at hand knowing the device will always be up-to-date without the need for manual programming.
Superior build quality
The R7 is designed and tested to MIL-STD-810 standards, meaning it can withstand harsh conditions and survive repeated drops. Even the enlarged screen is ruggedised for impact resilience and protection from drops.
The device is also up to IP68 rated, so it's completely dust tight and can withstand water immersion (up to 2 metres deep for 2 hours) and high-pressure water jets from any direction. Perfect in industries like automotive and other niches where water and dust exposure is high.
Features that pack a punch
The Capable and Premium version of the radio give end users access to a range of smart features. From a safety perspective this includes Lone Worker, Man Down, Location Tracking, and Panic Alarm - all emergency features that have potentially life-saving value.
Other features like Job Ticketing and Extended Alarm Management are excellent for both productivity and efficiency. For more information, go to our Features page to learn more about their use.
Please note - the Motorola R7 is available in three variations. The Motorola R7 Premium (Full-Keypad & Non-Keypad), the Motorola R7 Capable (Full-Keypad & Non-Keypad), and the Motorola R7a (Non-Keypad only).
The Premium comes with all features as standard (excluding AES 256-bit encryption), the Capable requires licence keys to activate the features, and the R7a is a stripped back version with no additional features available.
Motorola R2
Part of the R-series, the Motorola R2 is dubbed an "everyday workhorse" due to its durability and ergonomics. Its long-range coverage, impressive audio, and easy handling make it an ideal industrial Motorola radio, particularly for end users who want a more cost-effective alternative to the R7.
Long-range coverage
Much like its counterpart, the R2 has a high sensitivity receiver and a high efficiency antenna, so coverage will stand more chance of reaching those hard-to-reach places. It's also compitable with a range of MOTOTRBO systems, including Capacity Plus - so it will cater for sites big and small.
Impressive audio
In manufacturing, background noise influences worker safety, productivity, and efficiency. The R2's SINC+ feature is a noise suppressor that uses advanced algorithms to eliminate disruptive background noise and help get the message across in all corners of the workplace.
Easy handling
The device is as light as it is tough. Weighing less than 290 grams (with a high-capacity battery), the R2 is easy to carry and endured Motorola's rigorous Accelerated Life Testing programme (ALT), which gives it up to five years of field use without the need for replacement.
Durability and practicality
The R2 meets MIL-STD-810 standards so it can withstand heavy drops, and its IP55 rating gives it protection against water and dust, albeit not as much as the R7. Featuring a slim, high-density battery, the R2 will last a full shift. Pressing the PTT button will also activate the LED light - whicn when red, indicates a low battery.
Motorola Evolve
We switch our attention from Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) devices to Push-to-Talk Over Cellular (PoC) models that operate on cellular networks. First up is the Motorola Evolve device. Designed for sites with reliable mobile coverage, the Evolve providers end users with mission-critical reliability, and the user experience of a smartphone and a two-way radio.
Rugged LTE handheld device
Created for industries like manufacturing, The Evolve's IP68 rating, 5" glove-operable and liquid-resistant touch screen, and long life battery make it the ideal industrial Motorola radio. It also exceeds MIL-STD-810 standards in 11 categories, so it will withstand repeated drops and be more resilient to wear and tear.
Open app ecosystem
Built on the Android operating system, the Evolve gives end users access to a range of applications to boost worker safety, productivity, and efficiency. You can use our TRBOCALL app for Push-to-Talk (PTT) functionality, indoor and outdoor location tracking, and to receive job tickets.
A whole host of other applications will be available on the device, so it comes down to personal preference as to what you use.
Seamless connectivity
The device uses a SIM to operate and supports 3G, 4G, and WiFi connectivity. If your workers end up in an area where there's no WiFi, the Evole will automatically connect to 3G or 4G data. From a SIM perspective, you can use a roaming SIM to operate the device anywhere in the world.
When experiencing planned downtime, you can programme and the device via 3G, 4G, or WiFi - so they'll always be up-to-date during production hours.
Superior audio quality
Superior audio is a common theme on industrial Motorola radios. In this respect, the Evole is no different. The device uses three microphones for superior noise suppression and echo cancellation, meaning you will be heard in any environment.

Motorola ION
The Motorola ION is their first business-ready communication device with always-on voice and broadband data capabilities. With renowned PTT performance, an open app ecosystem, and business-critical data and workflows, the ION is built for high-performance production environments.
Seamless voice
Motorola's marketing material for the ION refers to an "ALWAYS ON" approach. Part of this refers to the fact the device will work on both LTE and DMR networks. Say you enter an area where there's no 3G. 4G, or WiFi coverage, the ION will automatically switch to DMR mode - so you never experience downtime with your two-way communication.
Uptime, not downtime
Cloud-based configuration gives you access to remote updates, and real-time device monitoring. This means you're able to deploy and maintain your devices with minimal touchpoints and downtime. Your IT team, for example, will spend less time managing your fleet, allowing your workforce to spend more time on critical tasks.
Rugged reliability
With an IP68 rating, an intrinsically safe (TIA-4950) certification, and an ultra-rugged touchscreen, your teams will have peace of mind that the ION will withstand any working environment - whethere you're in food production or car making.
Safe and secure
With the highest level of device and network security you're able to carry out real-time threat monitoring and have the confidence that your data will stay safe and secure.
Motorola LEX L11
The LEX L11 is another mission-critical device. It is designed with first reponse in mind - making it a fantastic industrial Motorola radio in emergency scenarios. Again, you can utilise the TRBOCALL app for features like location tracking, which is crucial in an industry that is known for having high accident and injury rates.
Dedicated emergency button
Common on most leading Motorola products, the LEX L11 also has a decidated emergency button. When pressed, an alarm will activate and all radio users (including dispatch operators) will know there's an ongoing emergency.
High quality audio performance
It's a theme that flows throughout this blog, and the LEX L11 is no different when it comes to impressive audio. You're able to turn down unwanted distractions with noise cancellation, be heard in any environment with dual front-facing speakers, and even improve audio performance while the device is holstered, thanks to audio tunneling technology.
Extended reach with radio collaboration
You can quickly manage and control a Motorola Bluetooth paired radio directly from the LEX L11. This includes controlling the radio's folders, channels, and volume - all done remotely.
Performance in harsh environments
The LEX L11 wouldn't be a suitable industrial Motorola radio for manufacturing if it didn't live up to the billing for being rugged. It's IP67 rated and built at MIL-STD-810G for Drop and Shock.
